Reba McEntire Recounts How She Got Involved in Broadway

Well, they had asked me to do Annie Get Your Gun at the beginning, and I said, no, I can't do it. I'm just a gypsy at heart, and can't stay in New York for a year and doing this play. And so we continued our tour. And so in 2000, I think it was around April or May, Norval and I were flying up in our plane from Nashville to New York, and we were going to get on the Concorde and fly to Europe to do a TV show called Stars Sing the Beatles. This is just how fate will take over. We landed, and our pilots came back and said, your flight's been cancelled because the catering truck backed into the Concorde and knocked the door off the hinges. They can't fly today. Isn't that bizarre? Wouldn't you call that strange? So Narvel said, what do you want to do? I said, let's go see a play, because we're going to fly out tomorrow. And he said, well, what are you going to see? I said I don't really care. Any play is fine with me. And he says, why don't we go see any Get Your Gun, just see what everybody's talking about. So by intermission, we looked at each other and I said, I have to be on that stage. So we worked it all out. Narvel took care of that. And we blocked off the first half of 2001. For me to be Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was so excited for my opening night, I couldn't hardly stand it.
