2023 sees over 2.24 million Mexican migrants seeking entry to US from Mexico

CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - RECENT 2023: The number of irregular migrants, mostly from Central American countries, intending to travel to the United States through Mexico this year is estimated to be more than 2,240,000. Irregular migrants seeking to live in the United States for better living conditions continue to wait in cities near the Mexico-US border. According to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), between January and November of 2023, it is estimated that over 2,240,000 people arrived at the border to cross from Mexico to the United States. This number was 2,326,000 in 2022 and 1,856,000 in 2021. According to records from the Mexican National Institute of Migration (INM), these migrants are from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Pakistan, China, and various African countries. The INM reported that 431,000 people have been registered for regularization of their status in the country, and the process is ongoing. According to a report from the Mexican-based website El Economista, in 2014, 153 migrants died or went missing while attempting to reach the United States; in 2015, the number was 148; in 2016, it was 254; in 2017, 245; in 2018, 596; in 2019, 854; in 2020, 798; in 2021, 1249; in 2022, 1457; and this year, 1560 migrants lost their lives or went missing in their attempt to reach the United States. These migrants pay a certain amount of money to human traffickers to reach the United States. However, those who cannot afford it are forced to walk for weeks and are also exposed to violence and discrimination. According to a report published by the IOM on September 12th, the Mexico-US route has been recorded as the 'world's most dangerous land migration route. Around 10,000 migrants have been apprehended daily at the southwest border this month, according to border patrol officials.
