View from the International Space Station of the Sun rising through Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere is seen as a thin blue band above the night side of the Earth. Up to 80% of the air in the atmosphere is found in the lower 12 kilometres or so, a region called the troposphere, where weather occurs. This is the lower orange band seen here. Above this is the stratosphere (pale blue), which contains the ozone layer, which extends to some 55 kilometres above the surface. The mesosphere (dark blue) extends up to some 90 kilometres, becoming increasingly rarefied. Space technically starts at 100 kilometres' altitude. The ISS orbits at between 330-430 kilometres
