4 members of the Japan marathon team for the Berlin Olympic Games visited Meiji-jingu Shrine to pray for victory before they departed from Tokyo on On June 1, 1936. On the back of the shrine gate, the party, including a marathon runner Tamao Shiwaku carrying Japan's national flag, walked the approach with a grave look where other visitors could be seen. 4 runners, a team director and a coach took a ceremonial photograph in front of a hall of worship.(Asahi World News 120)
