It was first used as a prisoner of war (PoW) camp during World War II, when it housed high risk Nazi/German prisoners. In 1944 a German prison was accused by others of leaking information to the British and was beaten to death and hanged by fellow prisoners. Six were found guilty of his killing and were hanged at Pentonville. In 2014 a former PoW left £384,000 to the vilalge for the kindness shown to him when he was a PoW. The camp is not owned by a trust.
