The Tuna fish market at the General Santos Fish Port Complex...

GENERAL SANTOS, MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES - 2009/12/05: The Tuna fish market at the General Santos Fish Port Complex. The General Santos Fish Port Complex (GSFPC), covering an area of 11 hectares, south of General Santos City, was financed by the Japanese Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund, completed in 1997. The tuna fishing industry contributes 4% of the country's GNP. With an annual production volume of 2.4 million metric tons of fish,  the Philippines ranks 7th among the top tuna producing countries in the world, both in terms of fresh/frozen tuna and canned tuna. There are 15 canning factories in the area. Traders, buyers and fishermen negotiate each yellow-fin's quality and worth in the Fish Port trading hall. Samples of the tuna flesh, extracted by poking a needle-like rod into the fish, are smelled and examined in order to assess its freshness. Large Philippine boats have to go further and further out, for 7-10 days - to Papua New Guinea, to the Solomon Islands, to get a good catch. Some years ago they could return with a similar catch the same day. The major export markets are Japan, Korea, USA and Hong Kong. (Photo by Gerhard Joren/LightRocket via Getty Images)
