Prosecutors are pursuing a new trial for Steve Pankey after a jury was deadlocked last week in the 1984 disappearance and death of Jonelle Matthews. Pankey has a new defense team when his defense attorney Anthony Viorst stepped down to represent him. Public defenders Samantha Deveraux and John Patrick Walsh will defend Pankey if he goes back on trial. The jury convicted Pankey of false reporting to authorities but could not reach a decision on the other charges against him which included first-degree murder after deliberation, felony murder and second degree kidnapping. Pankey, 70, is accused of kidnapping and killing 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews in 1984. The murder charges come almost four decades after the girl disappeared from her Greeley home and was never seen alive again. He is accused of forcing Jonelle from her home at gunpoint on Dec. 20, 1984, and then killing her. A hearing will be held on November 17th in the case. (Photo by Helen H.
