Nepalese police are watched by bystanders as they measure the dead body of a Gangetic dolphin which was killed by local fishermen at Biratnagar some 240kms south east of Kathmandu on June 23, 2008. Villagers in south eastern Nepal have killed the rare Gangetic dolphin, Platanista gangetica, unaware that the freshwater mammal is critically endangered, local police officials said. Being a mammal, the Ganges River dolphin cannot breathe in the water and must surface every 30-120 seconds.
