A Gharial - Gavialis gangeticus - catche

A Gharial - Gavialis gangeticus - catches a fish at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati, the capital city of the northeastern state of Assam on May 25, 2009. The Gharial is a unique species of crocodile-like reptile with long, narrow jaws and a bulbous snout and though millions of years ago there were several similar species, today the Gharial is the last of this ancient line. Gharials are listed as Critically Endangered on the Red List of endangered species of animals and plants issued by the World Conservation Union, and qualifies for protection under the CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) Appendix II.
