Appeal court president Wafi Ougadeye said he confirmed the life sentence handed down against Habre in May last year, a landmark ruling seen as a blow to the impunity long enjoyed by repressive rulers. The case, at the Extraordinary African Chambers (CAE) - a special tribunal set up by the African Union under a deal with Senegal - is the first time a country has prosecuted a former leader of another nation for rights abuses.
