The resin is extracted from tree species (Balsam tree family) (Burseraceae) which grows in arid regions around the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan), in Arabia (Dhofar in southern Oman, Hadramaut in Yemen) and in India. In ancient times, Frankincense was a highly paid and sought after commodity and was traded on the Incense Route and in almost all areas of the ancient world. The Egyptians used frankincense four thousand years ago for the good smell of the air, and ointments for the treatment of wounds."
