Machinery To Remove Nuclear Fuel Unveiled

KANAGAWA, JAPAN - JAN. 18: Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Toshiba Corp. unveiled new machinery on Jan. 18, 2016, to remove spent nuclear fuel from a storage pool at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant's No. 3 reactor. The remote-controlled device is equipped with two robotic arms, a crane and a mechanical claw to hold the fuel rods. It will be installed inside a temporary shroud that will cover the No. 3 reactor so TEPCO, the operator of the complex, can start removing the fuel within fiscal 2017.
