Shoppers flocked to shopping centers in without value-added tax day in Colombia

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - JUNE 19: Hundreds of people flocked to Colombian shopping centers to take advantage of a day without value-added tax on Friday (June 19), 2020 in Bogota. A plan of Colombia’s President Ivan Duque to reactivate the economy turned into an epidemiological nightmare as crowds gathered at large retailers amid a pandemic on Friday, the first of three days without sales tax. The measure triggered Black Friday-style shopping frenzies in retail outlets, which reopened in the capital Bogota this week after three months of lockdowns to curb the coronavirus pandemic. General Manager of El Gran San Shopping Center Jansen Estupinan said “We are very strict with 35% capacity rules. 1,400 people are the maximum capacity among logisticians, employees, and visitors who can be inside at the same time.” Bogota’s Mayor Claudia Lopez was one of many Colombian public figures who denounced the measure as irresponsible, re-tweeting a description of today as “Covid Friday.” Colombia has registered so far 63,276 coronavirus related cases and 2,045 deaths.
