An impact of this magnitude is believed to have led to the death of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. If an asteroid such as this, several kilometres across in size, were to hit the Earth today, it would almost certainly trigger a mass extinction. It is unlikely that the human race with be able to survive such devastation.
