(Original Caption) 6/24/1957-Manaure, Colombia: A view of the salt beds at Manaure on the northern coast of Colombia where more then 2,000 Guarjura Indians and their families take part in the annual salt harvest. As far as the eye can see, thousands of monds of salt are piled up in the huge salt beds. he salt is brought ashore, put in bags and used for domestic and comercial use. The salt has come from sea water that has been evaporating for months. The women blacken their faces and exposed parts of their bodies with "Pai-Pai" a liquid made from tree bark, to protect them from the tropical sun.
