Rough Play in a Giant's Game

(Original Caption) This dramatic sequence was made by INP Photographer Herbie Scharfman, as Willie Mays of the New York Giants collides with Brooklyn Dodger catcher Rube Walker in the eight inning of the game at Ebbets Field. The play started when Gail Harris of the Giants hit a grounder which Dodger second baseman Junior Gilliam fielded and threw to first baseman Gil Hodges to Rob Harris of a hit. Hodges then saw Mays breaking for the plate and threw to Walker. As Mays came charging to the plate, he flew over Walker. When Mays tried to get up, Walker still clutches the ball, so Mays is up and Walker is flat on his back. Umpire Landes called Mays out on the play. Walkers suffered an injured shoulder during the scramble.
