It is the first city in the southern hemisphere or in the western Pacific region and also the youngest city, to be so honored. Olympic visitors and competitors will find a gracious modern city of 1,500,000 people, characterized by fine streets and boulevards, splendid public buildings and spreading parks and gardens. A vital industrial and commercial metropolis, it stretches for 30 miles from the shores of Port Phillip Bay to the fringes of the Blue Dandenong Ranges. The main stadium for 1956 Olympics, the Melbourne cricket ground, is in the center foreground, and to the left is Olympic Park venue for games swimming, diving, waterpolo, cycling and soccer.
