Destruction of Reza Shah Pahlavi's Mausoleum

A clergyman talks to a Revolutionary Guard during the destruction of Reza Shah Pahlavi's Mausoleum ordered by Sheikh Sadegh Khalkhali near near the shrine to a Shiite saint in Shah Abdol Azim on 1st April 1980 in Tehran, Iran. Khalkhali was a Shia cleric of the Islamic Republic of Iran who is said to have "brought to his job as Chief Justice of the revolutionary courts a relish for summary execution" that earned him a reputation as Iran's "hanging judge". In 1925 Reza Khan deposed Ahmad Mirza, the last shah of the Qajar Dynasty, and was proclaimed shah of Iran. He changed his name to Reza Shah Pahlevi, thus founding the Pahlevi dynasty.
