TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Rusmir Smajilhodzic Recent picture of a Slovenian border policeman strictly checking papers of a Croatian motorist at blocked local bridge over Kupa river which makes a border between Croatia and Slovenia in village of Gasparci, 17 October 2007. Slovenia, member of the European Union since 2004, will join the European space of freedom of movement on 21 December 2007 with seven another countries of Eastern Europe and Malta. From this day, the bridge of Gasparci, and tens of others along the border used since decades by the Slovenian and Croatian local population, will be closed with the unrestricted passage. This and many other local crossings will be demolished or padlocked, to limit the number of entry points along the 670-kilometre (420-mile) border. Slovenia's border with Croatia will become the southeastern land frontier of the Schengen area, which enforces strict controls on entry but allows almost free movement between the system's member countries.
