The bridge is part of the Castelvecchio (english: "Old Castle") complex that includes also a military fort and the residence of Cangrande II Della Scala, member of the family that ruled Verona in the Middle Ages. It was built in the XIV century over the Adige River with red bricks in the upper side and white marble in the lower one. Its construction was ordered to allow the Cangrande family to flee the city in case of aggression.
