Proteus mirabilis are gram-negative rod bacteria that naturally live in soil and decomposing matter. They are the second leading cause of urinary tract infections in humans, e. coli is the leading cause. P. mirabilis can also infect wounds and can be acquired in a hospital setting. This specific species of proteus, usually responds well to antibiotics.
