STOMA and GUARD CELLS in the Epidermis of a leaf, Spiderwort (Tradescantia sp), 250X. The Epidermis of a leaf has numerous tiny pores, or STOMATA (singular stoma) that facilitate gas exchange--Carbon Dioxide going into the leaf, and Oxygen produced by Photosynthesis going out. The Guard Cells undergo changes in turgidity, changing their shape thus opening or closing the stoma. Stomata are much more abundant on the underside of the leaf, and usually close in the evening when photosynthesis stops.
