Guarding The Nameless Dead In Kashmir

BIMYAR, KASHMIR, INDIA - MARCH 02: A video journalist captures footage of Chachal graveyard where Atta Mohammad Khan, a grave digger in Uris Bimbyar village, has buried 235 nameless dead, dubbed as militants, allegedly with bullet wounds and torture marks, close the ceasefire line or Line of Control (LoC) that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan on March 2, 2014 in Bimyar, 80 km (50 miles) to the west of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir, India. Human rights groups and activists are demanding probe by an international agency in to the unnamed graves that have been found in various districts of the conflict-torn Himalayan region. Rights activists say that they have identified dozens of burial grounds where they believe Indian government forces dumped more than 2,400 corpses. Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons group says 8,000 people are missing since the insurgency began and they believe most have been taken by Indian government forces and never returned. Since 1989, Kashmir has been a state under siege, with both India and Pakistan laying claim to it. Human rights organizations say more than 80,000 have died in the two decade long conflict with the Indian government claiming the number as 40,000. (Photo by Yawar Nazir/Getty Images)
