They provide the transport that brings food and water to millions of peasants in the remotest parts of Ethiopia, where there are no roads or communications. With an estimated five million donkeys, Ethiopia is believed to have the second largest donkey population in the world, after China, which has more than 12 million. In Ethiopia, donkeys carry out the toughest physical tasks in the lives of rural and urban communities. They transport water, sacks of grain, commodities, fire woods as well as people and work on farms. The Donkey Sanctuary, a UK-funded project established in Bishoftu, in 1994. The clinic has an ambulance and a mobile medical unit that had allowed it to expand its reach in Bishoftu and Oromia, the southwestern regional state where Bishoftu is located. In addition to Bishoftu, similar clinics have been set up in Addis Ababa, Hawassa and Alage in southern Ethiopia, as well as Bahirdar and Mekelle in the northern part of the country.
