Mental Health in Colorado
Denver, CO. - JULY 09: Outreach worker Bernie O'Connell, of the Saint Francis Center, visits with Connie Lynn Bell at her camp under the 6th Avenue in Denver, CO July 09, 2014. She and her common-law husband, Daniel Fulsom, have lived here for a month and have been homeless over four years. Bernie offers to help the couple replace their lost identification. Connie lists a series of mental health issues attributing her anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, to an abusive relationship and loosing her children to social services in 2009. She said she couldnt take the Effexor and Seroquel prescribed to her, I felt like a zombie and I couldnt function. Taking a hit of marijuana Connie said, Thats what helps me. Id rather go to that than the stuff these doctors make. Daniel admits that he has his own mental health issues, since the beginning of this year Ive had nothing but bad luck. Im trying to get out of a depression stage right now. I dont think about suicide, but I have a couple times this year.
Daniel changes the subject, Did you hear about the new law that Obamas trying pass, about the chip? Connie answered, By 2017 he wants everybody to have a computer chip implanted in their brain. Departing the camp, Bernie said, I can't believe we treat the least of our brothers like this, its very sad. (Photo By Craig F. Walker / The Denver Post)
