German Government Gives Up On No-Spy Deal

BERLIN, DEU - FEBRUARY 13: German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) (L) uses her mobile phone next to Agriculture and Consumer Protection Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich (CSU) during a meeting of the Bundestag, or German federal Parliament, on February 13, 2014 in Berlin, Germany. According to a senior aide to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the country's government has given up hope on efforts towards a No-Spy Deal with the United States. Last year, it was discovered that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had been tapping Merkel's mobile phone since 2002, prior to her taking office as federal chancellor. Talks towards an agreement to stop further examples of such surveillance have been ongoing since last month, but Phillip Missfelder, the Christian Democrats' (CDU) coordinator for transatlantic relations, said at a press conference today that he did not expect a legally-binding bilateral no-spy agreement to come out of further discussions.
