The film tells the story of Ilan Halimi, a 23-year-old telephone salesman who was held and tortured for three weeks in a poor multi-ethnic suburb of Paris by a gang that sent ransom demands to his family. In 2009 a Paris court sentenced 28-year-old Youssouf Fofana to the maximum possible sentence, life in prison with a mandatory 22 years, for the kidnapping and the murder of Halimi, a hate-crime that shocked France.
