Doctor Displaying Curette

(Original Caption) Artery "Reamer" Newest Aid for Heart Sufferers. San Francisco, Cal.: In photo at left above Dr. Angelo May, San Francisco Surgeon and Gynecologist, a member of the Mt. Zion Hospital staff, displays the flexible curette he devised to clean and open up heart arteries, clogged as a result of heart disease. The curette works on the same principle as a plumber's snake, reaming away fatty growths that block the normal flow of blood through the arteries. Dr. May has used the device only on laboratory animals, but Dr. Charles P. Bailey of Philadelphia, is credited with using it successfully on two human patients. The photo at right is a self-explanatory diagram, showing how the curette is used. At left how the heart appears to the surgeon who is doing the "pipe-cleaning" job. At right a cutaway showing how the curette is inserted into the tied-off artery to clear partial
