El Cortijo del Fraile is a building that is located southeast of Nijar (Almería), within the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar.The Cortijo del Fraile is one of the most interesting buildings of Cabo de Gata Natural Park because of the beauty of the building and the tragic events in it. Declared of cultural interest is a one-story building with rooms built around a central courtyard, chapel, burial crypt, ovens, stables, and a well cochineras fairly well preserved.Built by Dominican friars in the eighteenth century, it passed into private hands in 1836 as part of the process of secularization, which expropriated properties to religious orders. Since then the farm was used for farm work, separating the homes of the owners and employees. The owners left the property in search of more profitable land, leaving the farm in the hands of a sharecropping contract employee. It was this sharecropper who in 1928 decided to marry his daughter Francisca Canadas, known as the Catch Paca, resulting in an arranged marriage that would end in tragedy. The facts were known as the Crime of Nijar, and soon Federico Garcia Lorca inspired by this event created his "Bodas de Sangre".The farm and its surroundings have been used as a natural film set in many films, the most famous being "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "For a Few Dollars More" by director Sergio Leone.
